Bottled water blamed for rise in cancer cases

A source at the Consumer Protection Society (CPS) has said that the rise in cancer rates in the Kingdom is “50 percent due to” an increase in bromate in bottled water.

The source said the figure was cited in a report from King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center, a copy of which was given to the CPS in order to “investigate the causes”.

“The CPS is speaking to the relevant authorities to find immediate and long-term solutions to the problem with the Ministry of Health, the Saudi Food and
Drug Authority and bottling companies,” the source said.

The Saudi Food and Drug Authority conducts daily inspection rounds of potable water factories and tests products on the market, and has at various times ordered the closure of around ten bottled water manufacturers.
